about

I wrote Saudade a few months back sporadically during Winter break. I literally can't remember where the song came from, but I know for a fact that everything was built around the acoustic guitar. This song was definitely a challenge to write a rhythm section to because of how inconsistent and moving the chords are. But I did my best without compromising the grooviness of the song.

Coming to the end of the track, I realized how well I was set up to solo over the chorus. So I did my thing, and knew immediately that I had to get someone else to solo right after me. I asked my pal, Connor Gilkinson (Dawning of the Inferno, ex-Terra Nova Bay), to do something as he's a super talented and versatile guitarist.

For the vocal aspect of the song, I really wanted to go all out and unleash my inner R&B superstar (don't ask, ahahaha). Lyrically, I kept changing the subject matter from "wanting to be with someone" to "not wanting to be with someone" to "wanting to be with another someone" until something eventually clicked and I ended up with a combination of all three.

lyrics

Rain or shine, she always has her head
Caught up in the clouds of cigarettes
She only lights up to make the stress
Leave with the smoke

They always told me that I might have a chance
To have her heart and, maybe hold her hands
But I never saw the point of trying
'Cause one of us would've ended up dying

I took my chances, with nothing to expect
But disappointment. Yet there I was
Still hoping for the best
Now I'm left empty handed

Mirror, mirror on the wall
Is she the fairest one of them all?
Because I only see misery
On that pretty face
In this hopeless place
While she hasn't time to waste on me

Isis eyes above mocha lips
On a face I wouldn't wake up to
So let me avoid that smile
But I don't think I could
Birds sing along with every word she says
In a voice I wouldn't wake up to
Is rather lose sleep for nights
But I don't think I could

If I could only stop thinking of...

Her short hair and the way I stare at her like she is not aware
How I'm head over heels for those cheekbones
Her short hair and the way she stares at me like I am not aware
Of all the chills when her shoulders get cold

Isis eyes above mocha lips
On a face I wouldn't wake up to
So let me avoid that smile
But I don't think I could
Birds sing along with every word she says
In a voice I wouldn't wake up to
Is rather lose sleep for nights
But I don't think I could
